CUSTOMER PAIN POINTS:
Liquid handling systems are essential laboratory tools for medical diagnostics, research, pharmaceutical, and other life sciences applications. Highly automated liquid handlers are used to increase accuracy, efficiency, and reproducibility of lab works in various clinical and research settings.
Amidst the global component shortage crisis, a leading manufacturer of scientific research instruments were in need of an immediate power solution to fulfill their complex power requirements for their automated liquid handler. The highly engineered automated liquid handler had multiple electrical components that required different or isolated voltage channels to power. Onboard electronics included motors, pumps, LED lighting, camera, and sensors. It is crucial to isolate sensitive components such as sensors and cameras from noise inducing components such as motors and pumps. With limited space, a single power solution needs to provide the various voltage channels in a compact package that fit the existing space.
To make matters worse, the manufacturer was facing line down when their incumbent supplier couldn’t deliver products at the promised dates. They were met with multiple push outs and long production lead times when working with their incumbent supplier. It is then, the scientific research instruments manufacturer reached out to MEAN WELL and evaluated our NMP series configurable power supply to solve their challenges.

POWER SOLUTION:
The MEAN WELL NMP series configurable power supply is a standard off-the-shelf solution for all types of customized power requirements. The NMP650 (650W) and NMP1K2 (1200W) front-ends can accept 90~264VAC universal input, and the outputs can be configured for up to 12 isolated output channels, ranging from 3~330VDC. MEAN WELL worked with the scientific research instruments manufacturer to quickly setup a configuration and delivered samples from our local warehouse, which is assembled by our local Value-Added Center. Additionally, the NMP series is dual safety certified to medical and ITE safety standards, allowing the scientific research instruments manufacturer to quickly design into their automated liquid handler and amend all the safety requirements.

MEAN WELL then supported the scientific instruments manufacturer with our Lead Time Guarantee program and our local Value-Added Center to deliver mass production orders in a timely manner, which effectively solved their line down situation and mitigated profit loss.

CONCLUSION:
MEAN WELL’s NMP configurable power series were able to flexibly meet the automated liquid handler’s complex power requirements, and MEAN WELL’s commitment to customer service together helped the scientific instruments manufacturer to recover from various challenges they faced. This case study demonstrates the capability of MEAN WELL and MEAN WELL’s products to excel even amidst the worst times. MEAN WELL will continue to advance with the times of innovation and optimization, and it is our mission to provide the best cost/performance value of standard power supplies and services.
